Constanza the City
A beautiful city, located in the heart of the Dominican Republic, Constanza is known for its remarkable mountain climate and its incredible agricultural production. While the beaches on the coasts of the island are hot most of the year, the valley surrounding the city stays temperate providing a wonderful refuge from the heat. Constanza is a very popular tourist destination due to this wonderful climate and the drive from Santo Domingo which boasts numerous breathtaking views, several tourist viewpoints, and a day adventure out of the city. The city itself has a population of almost 60,000 people with a bustling city center filled with great bars and restaurants. However, most of the city is dedicated to agricultural production for the country and is the largest producer of domestic produce. Surrounding the city is bountiful farmland which eventually breaks up into mountains providing stunning a background to mundane tasks. While volunteers see pictures, nothing ever does this amazing city the justice it deserves.
Health
While many chronic health problems exist, HOF currently focuses on screening for hypertension, diabetes, and anemia. Maternal health and dental health are also specific targets of HOF. These diseases combine to account for the largest causes of disability and death in the country. To learn more about these specific health problems, click the link below.
Where we fit in
Global health is a massive undertaking. Specifically in our Dominican Republic program, we provide basic health screening and education to patients to help them gain control of their own health. In this way, we are able to coordinate with local partners to provide long term, sustainable care.
Service Trips
Every year, twice a year, Health Outreach Foundation visits Constanza. Over the course of a week, we host a screening clinic, or operativo, as well as make house calls. Our providers partner with local doctors to bring the clinic to patients. To learn more about our trips click below.
